What exactly is PTU? PTU stands for Parents and Teachers United and is a group of parents and teachers that come together to help Van Buren is various ways.
What does PTU really do? Over the years we have done many different things for the school. From the Marquee out front, Recess Equipment, the Climbing Wall to a new Camera. Every year we help with field trips and teacher appreciation week, educational events and many… many other things. So far this year we have purchased new white board tables for each grade’s classroom. These tables are really amazing and will be in classrooms early to mid-November. We are also working on raising money to update the playground equipment.
How can PTU do all these things? The Van Buren community’s help is paramount to helping us accomplish everything we do for the school. The community can help by supporting our fundraisers such as Panther Pounce, family nights, the Holiday Craft Fair and any of the other fundraising opportunities. We are always looking for community members to help with the planning and execution of these fundraisers.
How Can I help the PTU? There are many ways you can help out. You can support your favorite Van Buren Students in their efforts to collect money for the Panther Pounce coming upon September 30th. Kids are collecting donations, there are awesome prizes for kids who participate. You can come out and enjoy the fun family nights that we put on or you can get more involved by joining the PTU.
How do I join PTU? We welcome anyone who wants to get more involved and are actively looking for help with the upcoming Holiday Craft Fair and the Van Buren 50th Anniversary Bash. You can attend any of our upcoming meetings or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
What are the PTU Fundraising events this year? Our next and biggest fund raiser is the Panther Pounce on September 30th. Our first family night is October 21st for a Movie night, come out for the movie Goosebumps and a night of fun. The next big fundraiser is the Holiday Craft Fair on December 10th come out and do all your holiday shopping as we have a bunch of awesome vendors. In the Spring we will have a seed fundraiser to help our community start their gardens.

We will have live music by The Seers, Ronald McDonald will be on hand as well as an Ice Cream cart, food trucks, face painting and fun games including a photo booth.
Wow!! Can you believe that we have made it through the first 2 weeks already? This year has been kicked off with a bang and is looking to continue to be an awesome year. Here are a few highlights from the first 2 weeks.
Thank you to everyone that came out for the Ice Cream Social! In fact, we had so many people come out that we first ran out of hot dogs then Ice Cream. We happily scrambled to get more quickly for our community/family. We had 250 people come out to kick off the school year and celebrate Van Buren.
Back to school night was another awesome evening! The teachers and staff were excited to meet all the families and talk about the upcoming year. If you were not able to make it, please reach out to your child’s teacher for further information.
100 Mile Club kicked off on Tuesday 8/30 and students were lined up both morning and afternoon to participate. Kids came out ready to get started on their 100 mile goals this year. By the end of the first week of 100-mile club some kids already have 10 miles. In-fact standing by the starting line of the track you can hear kids talking about beating the record from last year & having their name with the new record. Watch out the challenge has been set and many have come out to compete. 100-Mile club will be going on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's mornings from 8:00am to 8:30am and in the afternoons from 3:25pm to 3:45pm.
Now what is yet to come…... there are many fun and exciting things coming from the school and the PTA this year. Join us for the first PTU meeting of the year on September 12th 6:30pm. We will be talking about the upcoming events and setting up committee’s for these events. There are not always enough or the right words to express how proud I am to be part of the Van Buren Community/Family. When my son started kindergarten I did look at several schools but I loved the family feel and community I got right here at Van Buren. As I have gone through the last couple years I have come to realize just how much time, effort, love and work everyone in the community puts into our school.
A big part of that is our volunteers, and the fact that they make our events, groups and fundraising possible. Weather you can give a minute, an hour, a day or more it is truly appreciated by the entire community. People often think they can’t volunteer because they work or they can't be there during school hours, but there is so much you can do in the evenings, weekends or even the middle of the night. Our volunteer coordinators are looking for anyone that wants to be involved.
Here are a couple of the upcoming volunteer opportunities that we are looking to be filled.
The time you give is invaluable to our school, community and kids. If you have not done so, please register to volunteer today at http://www.thompsonschools.org/domain/1948
Are you ready for school to start? I know my family is ready to go back to school and see friends, and learn from our amazing teachers. The PTU is also ready and planning a great year as well. We have been working hard over the summer to plan some amazing events for the school this year, the first of which is fast approaching.
I know many of you like me are wondering about the teachers that are no longer with Van Buren and who will be teaching your kiddos this year. Mrs. Randazzo has done a great job in filling our classrooms with some awesome teachers. Here is a break down on who is still here and who is new.
Now for some upcoming fun…..
On Thursday August 18th we will have our annual Ice Cream Social, but his year we are starting it earlier and having games and food. Starting at 4:30pm and going to 5:30pm families can come to the playground for some great games and to meet up with their friends. There will also be hot dogs, chips and a drink for $2 per plate. Then 5:30pm to 6:30pm we will be serving free Ice Cream and the school will be open to meet your students teachers and see their classrooms. You are welcome to bring in school supplies at this time.
The school year's first days are a little different this year, the first 2 days will only have half the students. This will give the teacher the opportunity to meet the students in smaller numbers and be able to assess the students needs and academic levels. Students with the last names starting with A-L will be on August 19th and M-Z will be on August 22nd. All students will start school on August 23rd.
The PTU has created a new website and if you are reading this you have found it! This site is for our Van Buren community to stay informed and better connected. Here is to a great year!!
